We are just putting the finishing touches on the design and production of Urban Fly Fishing Dallas–Fort Worth, a 384-page, heavily detailed and illustrated book for Imbrifex Books, one of our newest book publishing clients.
The title is the latest in Imbrifex’s Local Angler series of comprehensive and visually engaging books dedicated to the sport of fly fishing. It details the nuances of fishing the hidden streams and fish-abundant creeks within the bustling metropolitan area of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, blending the serenity of the sport with the vibrant urban backdrop.
The book contains hundreds of stunning photographs; technical specifications on gear; and detailed maps showing recommended waterways and access points. It even includes suggested local spots to grab lunch, and tunes to listen to while fishing (maybe Turtle Blues by Janis Joplin while fishing in Turtle Creek?).
For this book, we updated the existing series design to be more current and batter structured, and to present a clearer balance between the text, photography, and other data elements, white still feeling part of the existing book brand.
Fly fishing, with its intricate techniques and picturesque settings, naturally lends itself to visual storytelling, and one of the primary goals of the updated design was to manage and balance the numerous visual elements with the text to best tell the story and provide readers with an immersive experience. The result is a book that is as informative as it is aesthetically pleasing, offering readers a rich, engaging journey into the world of urban fly fishing.

An Ebook Too
In addition to the print book, we are also developing a reflowible ebook version of the title. This format will allow readers to enjoy the book on various electronic devices, with text and images that adapt to different screen sizes. For the ebook, our focus is in maintaining the integrity of the print design while ensuring a smooth, flexible, reading experience for digital audiences. The ebook conversion of a book with a design this complex is a whole other technical and creative challenge.
While the studio continues to produce a wide range of other types of content-focused media such as newsletters, annual reports and websites, we consider books to be one of our favorite and most rewarding categories of work. In addition to Imbrifex, we have produced dozens of titles for The Quarto Group, The Urban Land Institute, and a variety of other publishers.
Next Up
The next book project up for the studio is the design of The Pocket Universal Principles of Color for Quarto’s Rockport Publishers imprint, which we are just beginning. The book explores the core concepts and guidelines that are critical to the successful use of color in a handy 5” x 5” format.
